Does Negative SEO Work for Reputation Management?

Has someone trashed your reputation online? If so, you’ve got a few options to restore your good name. How does negative SEO fit into the mix?

File a Lawsuit – Not Recommended. I’ve been in my fair share of lawsuits with individuals and businesses who think they’ve got a great defamation claim. Some of the suits I saw I thought were clear cut. The problem with this approach is the legal system is broken. People lie, they lie a lot, especially in court and the court has no interest in holding those accountable who lie under oath.

Reputation Promotion/Suppression – This is one of the most popular services offered by ‘reputation marketers.’ They use content and link development to promote good content while burying negative content. When done correctly, it can work great but can take a significant amount of time depending on the size of the reputation attack.

Negative SEO – This is a really controversial way to fight back, but it can be highly effective. While there are various ‘ethical’ concerns, a well planned and thought out negative SEO campaign can work magic.

Because of the controversy and potential legal ramifications of Negative SEO, many providers won’t touch this tactic. If you don’t know what your doing, your Negative SEO attack can actually help the targeted website and give them a lift in rankings. [See recent update on Negative SEO Attack on AltitudeSEO.com.]
